Wilpattu, the largest and the oldest national park in Sri Lanka has been opened to the public after about 18 years. It is situated within the North Central Province and the North Western Province. It is 131,696 hectares in extent and was named as a wildlife sanctuary in 1905. Then in1985 it was declared a prohibited area for tourists. The lakes, most of which have been built by man, the natural shore and the grazing lands attract many animals to this place. Especially leopards often roam in this area. Another special thing is at Wilpattu is that there are green trees everywhere even during in the dry season. It is recorded that there are about 25 small lakes within the park. The north and the southern edges of the park are bordered by two rivers. They are ‘Modagam Aru’ and ‘Kala Aru’. As there are many reservoirs everywhere we can see a number of crocodilesand other animals at these places. The environment of this place helps the growth of not only trees but also animals. Wilpattu is a very valuable park in Sri Lanka and it is our bounden duty to protect it. Trackback(0)
