An ancient fifth century AD Old rock fortress of king Kassyapa with its world famous frescoes

Sigiriya (Lion's rock) is an ancient rock fortress with a castle, most popular for the ancient paintings (frescos). The fortress, which is very similar to the paintings of India's Ajanta Caves is situated in Matale District of Sri Lanka. It was built during the reign of King Kasyapa (477 – 495 AD). It is one of the seven World Heritage Sites (Ref:202) in Sri Lanka and is also a popular tourist destination.uilt on the rock at Sigirya

A popular destination of Sinhalese Buddhist's prilgimages because of its many ancient Buddhist monuments. Anuradhapura has been made royal capital by the king Pandukabhaya in 380 BC. It remained residence and royal capital for 119 successive Singhalese kings till the year 1000 AD when it was abandoned and the capital moved to Polonnaruwa. You will see some of the most famous as well as the tallest dagoba of Sri Lanka, remains from palaces, temples, monasteries, ceremonial baths and the temple of the holy Bo-tree. This tree was grown from a sapling of the very tree under which more than 2500 years ago the Buddha found enlightenment.

The Samadhi Buddha Statue, in the 'Dhyana' or Meditative pose is the work of a master sculptor. The expression on the face betrays neither happiness nor sorrow, but a deep contemplation. The first Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru is said to have found solace looking at a photograph of this image when he was in British custody in prison during the Indian Independence struggle.
